Tonkin Glad Farm / Iris Block

TONKIN GLAD FARM
3159 W. Deckerville Rd.
Fairgrove, MI 48733
Block: Iris

Our barn was moved from the Coler farm on Sheridan Road to this location in the
1950s. Previously two barns here had been struck by lightning and burned. Looking
at the structure, we believe this barn was built in early 1900s or late 1800s. The beams
are hand hewn 40 feet (single log). It was originally built on a stone wall. Work horses
were kept in the lower level.

The Iris block was selected from the 1930s Farmers Wife magazine because it most
closely resembles a gladiolas which we have raised for many years.

This block is dedicated in memory of our parents
William and Elizabethe Tonkin & Neal and Iva DeJongh.
