The Thumb Quilt Trail was established to promote tourism, to promote appreciation of barns, to tell the story of a small agricultural community and to promote the art, craft and legacy of quilt making in the Thumb region.

The Thumb Quilt Trail is meant to showcase, preserve and celebrate the Thumb Region's rural and agricultural heritage and traditions. The Trail will draw barn, history and quilting enthusiasts to our area.

The quilt trail concept has been in place nationwide for many years and in Michigan since 2009.  Currently there are barn quilt trails in twenty-one Michigan counties.  The Thumb Quilt Trail includes Huron, Sanilac, and Tuscola Counties..

What is a barn quilt trail?  It's an opportunity to drive in the countryside and view a barn or business with a quilt pattern square in full view.  It's a great way to take a leisurely drive, enjoy the countryside and a new route to a destination.  The visitor obtains a map from the internet or printed versions located at local businesses and can choose the day, time and route best suited for them.
