Steele Barn / Flying Geese Block

STEELE BARN
5106 Pattison Rd.
Mayville, MI 48744
Block: Flying Geese
Block Size: 6'X6'

The 80-acre farm was purchased in 1959 by Robert Steele, and in 1962 he married Sharon (Sarles).
The current house was built in 1965.  The barn was built in the late 1940’s or early 1950’s.  It was
originally set up for horses and cattle.  Their son, Jeffrey, started a hog farm for an FFA project in 1977,
and the facility was converted to a hog operation with up to 25 sows.  The hogs were sold by 1993.
The adjacent pole barn is currently used to house and feed young, bred heifers before they are moved to
Steele’s Dairy Farm on Treasurer Road where they freshen and begin milking.  Robert is a partner
in the dairy farm with his two brothers.

This barn is one of the last two story barns built.  The barn narrowly escaped a fire in 1988
when the nearby pole building burned to the ground.

Our former neighbor made us a quilt wall hanging with this same pattern.
We have a lot of geese flying over to land on nearby Phelps Lake.
