Scollon Barn / Bear Paw Block

SCOLLON BARN
5400 Schwegler Rd.
Cass City, MI 48726
Block: Bear Paw

This farm was originally owned by Andrew Schwegler (c.1888). David Law then purchased it in 1906.
Lewis Law inherited it from his father in 1928, and his son, Clinton, inherited it in 1949. The barn was
built on September 27, 1912 and it was a dairy farm barn. It housed cattle and pigs, hay, oats, and
whatever crops the Laws needed for the winter. At first they used milk cans for milk and then had
a bulk milk tank and Bill Bliss came to pick up the milk.

An interesting feature of the barn is that it has several large timbers that were scorched in the Great
Fire of 1881 that ravaged the Thumb of Michigan. (Go to: https://www.co.huron.mi.us/about_greatfire.asp
for further information about the fire.)

The farm was sold to Dr. Edward and Dorothy Scollon in 1979. They had cattle and pigs for several
years. They now rent out the barn.
