Bernhardt Barn / Old Maid's Puzzle Block

BERNHARDT BARN

2686 S. Caseville Road
Owendale, MI 48754
Block: Old Maid's Puzzle

Joe and Ruth Bernhardt purchased this 80 acre farm in Brookfield Township, Huron County on March 11,1947.
The barn had already been constructed on the farm when the property was purchased. Joe passed away in
June of 2010 and Ruth continued to own the property until her death in August of 2015. The barn, house
and various storage buildings were sold to Jordan Ruthenburg in January, 2016.

Joe took great pride in his barn. He owned a small herd of dairy cattle for most of his working years and
spent his summers filling the barn with hay, straw and grain for the cattle. During his retirement years he
replaced most of the windows, put white vinyl siding on the lower section and patched the roof after major
wind storms. Ruth lived in an assisted living facility in Caro for the last four years of her life and in the
spring of 2015 hired a local painter to re-paint the entire barn. Luckily she had the opportunity to view the
finished product, including the "quilt"  two times prior to her death.

Ruth selected this beautiful quilt block because of the colors that are in it. The barn has
always been painted red, so the quilt block was selected to go with the barn color.
