Shagene Barn / Rollaway - Flyaway Block

SHAGENE BARN
6760 N. Cemetery Rd.
Cass City, MI 48726

Block: Rollaway - Flyaway

This barn was built in the 1930's by the Italian immigrant Alred Fort. Built with post and beam
construction, it housed several head of Golden Jersey cows. These cows provided milk used
to make butter and ice cream for his confectionery store located in Cass City, MI. The Shagene's
purchased the farm in the mid 1960's. The barn is now used as an office, workshop and equipment
storage for their excavating and sand/gravel business. The quilt on the barn was added in the summer of
2014, measuring 16' X 16' square, it is believed to be the largest in the state! The block, named
"Rollaway - Flyaway," incorporates the rolling stone quilt block for the stone business, flying geese

for the many geese that make their home back at the gravel pit on the property, and pinwheels because
it's always windy in the the thumb of Michigan.
